I believe the sound of that exploding, probably is the "Brown Note".

Causing an immediate code brown for the driver.

Why would part of the exhaust burst if the engine timing let go?

That's like having a laptop tell you "Warning Danger To Manifold!!!" and your diamond-plate passenger floor fall out.

if the exhaust was full of fuel charged air because... badly timed valve movements.

My dad's R107 did that one time. He was actually driving behind it in his Audi and saw it happen. He also had a gas tank fall out of his '60s Le Mans convertible in an intersection.

That makes sense. I just couldn't connect how the exhaust would fail when bad timing would more quickly ruin the engine.

I reserve the right to be completely wrong.

but its the best explanation i can milk out of my brain.

I watched my buddy get his pair parted by fire shooting out of the carb on his POS 71 charger... which was fun. ( first attempt at starting after a full rebuild)

Dude you stink like gasoline.

Timing, gotta get on that.

you think!?
